In an age where darkness was ever-present, these intricately designed lanterns provided people with hope and guidance. Made with rapeseed oil and a lit wick, they emitted a gentle glow, while the protective frame of translucent washi paper shielded the flame from the wind.

The Ariake Andon is characterized by a special construction where the lamp is hung in the frame at night, serving as a dimmed nightlight. Its name evokes the Ariake moon, which remains visible into the early morning hours.

1 · From Bamboo to Raw Material
The bamboo, known as Madake or Moso, grows in selected cultivation areas. After two to three years, it is harvested when it is long and straight with wide node intervals, and then it is degreased and dried.
2 · Processing the Round Strips
The raw material is transformed into fine, round bamboo strips through many careful steps such as "hegi" (cutting), "kowari" (splitting), and "higohiki" (pulling). This creates the distinctive fine weave that Suruga Bamboo Senjiki Zaiku is known for.
3 · The Completion of a Masterpiece
In the final step, the woven bamboo strips are crafted into a stunning lamp with utmost precision. From stripping to drilling to the final assembly, each lamp becomes a unique piece, combining cultural depth with artisanal excellence.
