This year had a particularly competitive field, with thousands of ambitious projects from over 20 countries vying for recognition. The diversity and creativity of the entries highlight the vibrant and dynamic nature of the international design community. Only 81 projects managed to secure a place on the coveted longlist, including our SOMO Gen6, one of just 12 products in the "Sustainable Design (Consumer)" category. This selection showcases work that sets new standards in innovation and responsibility.
Being chosen for this exclusive list is a significant acknowledgement of our dedication to sustainable product development. It not only affirms the quality and vision of our work but also amplifies awareness for eco-friendly design on a global platform. The Details of Sustainability
Since our founding in Johannesburg in 2013, we have been committed to offering sustainable lighting solutions. Our SOMO solar light captures sunlight during the day, stores it, and delivers reliable light at night, all with the aim of serving both people and the planet.
Our products, from production to design, are sustainable through and through. Our Johannesburg facility operates on 90% solar energy. Thanks to this solar power, the SOMO light functions independently, without electrical outlets, and without harmful emissions. It replaces hazardous kerosene lamps and candles that frequently lead to fires in places like South Africa. And the best part? With the SOMO, we’ve developed not just a solar module, but a comprehensive modular system.
Flexible and Modular Design
Welcome to our solar system: The key feature of the SOMO is its flexible, modular usability, allowing for a wide range of applications. On one hand, the solar light can be used independently, with easy control through a push button. On the other hand, it fits seamlessly into our solar lanterns, where it's activated by a magnetic switch. These lanterns also come equipped with a dawn-to-dusk sensor, making them self-activating at twilight.
The same magnetic point in the SOMO is employed in our Light Carafes, enabling the light to be turned on effortlessly with a simple twist when attached to the carafe neck. In our Adventure Mounts, the solar light can be easily transformed into an outdoor tool thanks to an intuitive clip-on system, offering five carrying and mounting options for new possibilities. This thought-out design ensures seamless integration and flexibility across various scenarios because sustainability starts with design.
