What is the WFTO?
A Global Movement for Fairness
The World Fair Trade Organization is more than just an organization, it is a worldwide movement. As a global network of visionary small and medium-sized companies, the WFTO stands for a new way of doing business. With members in 84 countries, it demonstrates that a business model prioritizing the welfare of people and the planet over profit is achievable. Being a WFTO member means joining a community that actively reshapes the rules of global trade.
What the Membership Means for Sonnenglas
For Sonnenglas, joining the WFTO signifies a commitment to continue aligning our business with the ten principles of Fair Trade. These principles underpin our endeavor for social justice, fair compensation, environmental stewardship, and respectful collaboration with all involved parties. With this new chapter, we aim to show through every Sonnenglas product that economic success, human well-being, and environmental protection are linked together.
The 10 Principles of Fair Trade
1. Opportunities for Economically Marginalised Producers: In a neighborhood confronted by structural issues and high youth unemployment, the Sonnenglas factory in Johannesburg provides fair employment and prospects. We prioritize working with regional suppliers to strengthen the local trade ecosystem.
2. Transparency and Accountability: At Sonnenglas, we maintain an open-door policy. Anyone is welcome to visit our factory in Victoria Yards to witness our operations firsthand.
3. Fair Trading Practices: Our long-standing partnerships are built on respect and a shared pursuit of social, economic, and ecological fairness. Whether it's the suppliers of our components or the artists involved in our special editions, they can rely on our word.
4. Fair Payment: This principle extends not only to our trade partners but especially to all Sonnenglas employees. Our factory workers earn more than double the minimum wage and above the so-called ‘Living Wage’, which indicates the amount that is actually needed to afford a decent standard of living in South Africa.
5. No Child or Forced Labor: This is an unequivocal fact for Sonnenglas. We guarantee safe working conditions and strictly adhere to international labor rights.
6. No Discrimination, Gender Equity, Freedom of Association: Sonnenglas promotes equal opportunities for all, regardless of gender, origin, or status. 90% of our employees come from structurally disadvantaged communities. We are also proud that about 75% of our workforce are women.
7. Good Working Conditions: Sonnenglas provides jobs that are not only safe but also promote individual development. We operate a 40-hour workweek, compensate voluntary overtime, and offer numerous additional benefits, such as health services and access to microloans.
8. Capacity Building: We invest in the skills and knowledge of our employees. Even without prior qualifications, everyone at Sonnenglas has the chance for internal advancement. We also provide access to external training and support individual journeys through educational grants.
9. Promote Fair Trade: Through targeted education and active involvement in projects and partnerships, we promote the global shift towards Fair Trade conditions. We inspire others to embrace the Fair Trade philosophy, fostering a more equitable world economy together.
10. Climate Action and Protection of the Environment: Our solar lights themselves are a testament to sustainability, and environmental protection is considered at every stage of our production. From selecting recycled materials to utilizing sustainable production methods and packaging, we always consider the impact on people and the planet.
Fair Work at Sonnenglas
More than Just a Workplace
At Sonnenglas, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance. Our factory in Johannesburg is not just a workplace, it’s a place of growth and community. Fair compensation is key: Starting salaries are more than double the local minimum wage and surpass the "Living Wage" needed to cover basic living costs in South Africa. In a country where longer work hours are often the norm, we offer a 40-hour workweek, with voluntary and paid overtime, reflecting our philosophy of respect and fairness.
Where Social Responsibility Illuminates Shadows
We provide health and education incentives, including subsidies for private health insurance, educational grants, microloans for personal projects, and access to internal and external training. Flexible return options post-maternity leave are part of our strategy to promote a healthy work-life balance. We also prioritize supporting socially disadvantaged groups. Our location choice in the Lorentzville district reflects our dedication to addressing high unemployment rates, particularly the over 62% youth unemployment locally.
Every Solar Light Tells a Story of Fairness
Fair Work in the Factory: Handmade in Africa
Our manufacturing facility strategically located in Lorentzville, an area of Johannesburg which faces many struggles in everyday life, helps combat youth unemployment. Regardless of formal qualifications, we provide young talents opportunities for personal and professional advancement. Fair wages and numerous other benefits go well beyond WFTO standards. These benefits offer not just financial security but also the opportunity to be part of an inclusive and diverse workforce, especially supporting women and young people.
Fair Trade with Partners: United for Sustainable Progress
We ensure that fair treatment extends not only to our own employees but also to those companies we partner with. For instance, our collaboration with companies like Ngwenya Glass showcases this effort: Talented glassblowers transform used bottles collected in Eswatini into our stunning Light Carafes, sustainably and under fair working conditions. We also source raw materials from sustainable origins, steering clear of problem-prone mining regions, as seen in our Fair-certified solder. All our suppliers agree to adhere to our high Fair Trade standards as documented in a Code of Conduct which enforces fair and sustainable practices.
Fair and Artistic Collaborations: Tradition Meets Innovation
We take immense pride in our Artisan Editions. These are unique creations forged in collaboration with African artisans, capturing the cultural richness and creativity of the region. These editions are not only impressive works of art but also support and empower the local art scene. The Artisan Editions are crafted in close partnership with local artists, like Maxwell, a master of wire and bead art, who creates the colorful handles for our Beadwork Edition.
Fair for the Local Community: A Beacon of Hope
Our dedication does not end with the production of solar products. Through specialized pricing structures and community projects, we ensure our products reach those who need them most. Moreover, through various initiatives, like donating 200 solar lanterns to the People's Pantry in our neighborhood last Christmas, we bring light and hope to local communities.
Fair Future for Upcoming Generations: A Green Promise
Sustainable business practices also mean contributing to ensuring future generations have a livable planet. With Sonnenglas products, we aim to take a step in this direction. Our SOMO solar light offers a power-free alternative to conventional lighting solutions. Our production also prioritizes sustainability at every turn, from using recycled materials to installing solar panels on our factory's roof.
