The Everyday Challenges in Makers Valley

Life in Makers Valley comes with its own set of daily hurdles that might seem unfamiliar to some of us. Regular power and water outages are just part of life, adding pressure to already strained resources amid high unemployment rates. The economic aftermath of the pandemic has only made it tougher for many families to maintain a stable livelihood. Many households face not only darkness during outages but also the stark reality of food insecurity. Our project aims to address these issues, while also highlighting the strength and solidarity of a community working together toward a brighter future.

Creative Solutions from The People’s Pantry

In the heart of this vibrant community, The People’s Pantry stands as an emblem of creativity and dedication. Founded during the Covid-19 pandemic, the organization introduced an innovative Swop-Shop system that transforms recyclable materials into points, a form of alternative currency that can be exchanged for food and hygiene products. This system not only eases everyday burdens but also embodies how creative collaboration can tackle persistent issues: food is saved from waste, recycling and environmental awareness are promoted, and, most importantly, people in need receive much-needed support.

The People’s Pantry offers more than just food distribution. With several community and soup kitchens operating across the city, they reach hundreds every day. These venues also serve as hubs for change-makers. Through regular workshops and events - from Urban Gardening to Mindful Reading - they provide platforms for learning, sharing, and community interaction.

Shining Bright with Sonnenglas

Following the overwhelmingly positive feedback from last year’s donation, we’re thrilled to hand over 200 more solar lanterns to the Makers Valley community this year. Our partnership with The People’s Pantry enables us to deliver these solar lanterns where they are needed most, making everyday life a bit brighter. With their strong ties within the community, they’re the perfect partner to truly illuminate this holiday season and bring about positive change right in our neighborhood.
