About Sonnenglas® Japanese Bamboo Lantern
The Reinterpretation of the Ariake Andon
The Sonnenglas® Japanese Bamboo Lantern pays tribute to the classic Ariake Andon lantern from the Edo period, which once provided light and hope in dark times. Today, this traditional Japanese lighting design is reborn through solar power, thanks to the integrated SOMO Solar Light. This fusion of centuries-old craftsmanship and modern technology brings the classic design into the present.
Suruga-take-sensuji-zaiku
Every Japanese Bamboo Lantern is crafted at the Miyabi Andon workshop in Shizuoka, Japan, by the skilled hands of experienced artisans. Bamboo is used, harvested after two to three years of careful cultivation. The bamboo is processed into fine strips, which are then intricately woven using traditional techniques. The result is a frame that not only captivates with its aesthetics but also creates a mesmerizing play of light.
A Sensory Experience
The Japanese Bamboo Lantern offers more than just visual appeal. Inside the lamp, you can place flameless incense sticks or sachets to spread a pleasant aroma. This unique combination of light and fragrance transforms any space into a personal sanctuary, making the Bamboo Lantern a feast for the senses.
A Cross-Continental Collaboration
The Bamboo Lantern brings together the best of two worlds. While the delicate bamboo assambling is crafted by hand in Japan, the SOMO Solar Light is produced in our Fair Trade Factory in Johannesburg, South Africa. This international collaboration symbolizes the fusion of traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge solar technology and demonstrates how cultural exchange can lead to innovative and sustainable solutions.
