Hand-bent stainless-steel wire, powder-coated, with cotton yarn wound around it in hours of handwork — in Johannesburg, where Sonnenglas has been turning sunlight into work since 2013. Heritage is an object that is beautiful even switched off. With the SOMO on a bottle, it becomes a solar-powered table lamp.
Every Lightshade is made by hand, so each one is unique. Slight colour variations in the pattern are possible.

From the world of the Lightshade
A lampshade that is beautiful even switched off. With the SOMO, it becomes a table lamp.
The frame: stainless-steel wire, bent and welded by hand, then powder-coated — made in the craft tradition of lampshade making. The cork fits almost any bottle neck, the SOMO goes on top. By day it charges in the sun, by night it shines through shweshwe fabric or cotton wrapped by hand. No cable, no socket.

Discover everything about the LightshadeThe story
Since 2013 we have been turning sunlight into work in Johannesburg, today in our factory at Victoria Yards, in an area with more than 60 percent youth unemployment. A Lightshade is made in the craft tradition of lampshade making. Heritage carries that craft where you can see it: cotton yarn wound by hand, over several hours, directly around the stainless-steel wire frame, colour beside colour. No two shades are alike — slight colour variations in the pattern are part of it. In the evening, with the SOMO on top glowing through the yarn, an old bottle becomes a piece with a story.

The cork fits into almost any bottle neck — old wine bottles, water bottles, slender vases. No tools, no conversion.
A SOMO from generation 6 (since 2022) in Classic size — for example the one from the lid of your 1000 ml Sun Jar. The set already includes it.
Not in the Unwoven Collection: the yarn is wound onto the frame for good. Swappable covers are in the Swapcover collection.
