Battery replacement

Replace the battery

If the battery in your Sonnenglas® gets weak, you can replace it yourself. The steps are the same for Classic and Mini (Gen6).

Safety – please read first

  • The battery is a lithium-ion battery. Do not bend, pierce or crush it, do not throw it into a fire, do not short-circuit it.
  • Lift the battery out only with the included pry card – no screwdriver, nothing sharp.
  • If the battery is swollen, hot or damaged: stop using it and do not charge it (see “Dispose of the old battery”).
  • Not for children. Work at a dry, clean table.

In the replacement battery set

  • New battery with connector, adhesive pad already attached
  • Adhesive ring for the solar panel, with protective film
  • 2 alcohol cleaning wipes
  • Plastic pry card
  • Printed guide

You also need

  • A flat screwdriver (for the solar panel only)
  • A piece of adhesive tape (for the old battery)
  • A small plastic bag

The Sonnenglas® replacement battery set is not in our shop yet. Until then, write to us and we will help you.

Steps

Remove the solar panel and the old battery

  1. Step 1: Take the module off the jar

Place it on the table with the solar panel facing up.

  2. Step 2: Pry out the solar panel

Put the screwdriver at the edge between panel and housing and lift the panel slowly. Work your way around a little at a time until it comes loose. The connector underneath separates by itself. Do not bend the panel, do not press on its centre.

  3. Step 3: Loosen the battery

Slide the pry card under one edge of the battery and lift it off slowly and flat. It is held by double-sided tape. Do not bend the battery.

  4. Step 4: Unplug the connector

Pull the connector, not the cable. Tape over the connector of the old battery right away and put the battery into the plastic bag.

Clean the housing

  1. Step 5: Remove the old adhesive

Rub the remains of the old tape off the edge of the housing with your thumb, or scrape them off with the pry card, until the surface is completely clean.

  2. Step 6: Clean the bonding surface

Wipe the edge with the alcohol wipe, including the spot where the battery sits. Let it dry for 1 minute. After that, do not touch the surfaces with your fingers.

Fit the new battery and close the panel

  1. Step 7: Connect the new battery

Plug in the connector until it sits firmly. It fits one way only – do not twist it with force.

  2. Step 8: Stick the battery in place

Peel the protective film off the adhesive pad and place the battery where the old one was. Press it flat for 10 seconds. Lay the cable so that it does not get trapped.

  3. Step 9: Apply the adhesive ring

Peel off one protective film, place the ring exactly on the cleaned edge and press it down all the way round. Only then peel off the second protective film.

  4. Step 10: Fit the panel

Line up the panel so that the connector sits on its counterpart (same position as before), and lay it in straight.

  5. Step 11: Press firmly

Press firmly all the way round the edge with both thumbs for 30 seconds. The edge must sit evenly everywhere.

Step 12: Wait 24 hours

Only then is the adhesive at full strength and watertight. Until then, keep the lamp out of the rain. After that, put it in the sun: it charges and switches on again when it gets dark.

Dispose of the old battery

Batteries do not belong in household waste. Hand in the taped battery free of charge at a battery collection point: in any shop that sells batteries (supermarket, drugstore, electronics store) or at a recycling centre.

Take a swollen or damaged battery directly to a recycling centre and tell the staff. Please do not send it to us by post.

Good to know

In the EU, the replacement of batteries by end users is governed by Art. 11 of the EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542.

Only use a matching replacement battery: the Sonnenglas® replacement battery set or an equivalent battery of the same size, the same voltage (3.7 V) and the same connector. Leaks or damage caused by not following this guide are not covered by the statutory warranty.

Sonnenglas® products exclusively use cadmium-free accumulators in accordance with battery regulations.
