Mousse au Chocolat with Baobab - a classic dessert with a South African twist

Not only is South Africa the proud home of Sonnenglas, it's also a beautiful country with breathtaking views and a fascinating culture. Delicious cuisine is part of that culture, which is why we love to share traditional recipes from the South African kitchen.

Let’s start with a very special mousse au chocolat. This recipe is unique (and healthy!) because the mousse is made from fruit: avocados, bananas, and dates. The avocados and bananas give it a creamy texture and the dates make it sweet, while cocoa powder provides the color and flavor of chocolate. (We used organic fair trade cocoa powder for this recipe.)

And the secret ingredient? Baobab powder!

The powder from the fruit of the baobab tree adds a touch of South Africa to this classic French dessert.

The baobab tree can be found in numerous regions of South Africa and is known for its healing properties. Medicine can be derived from nearly every component of the tree, and the powder made from its fruit is hailed as a powerful superfood. In addition to its antioxidant effect, baobab powder is rich in vitamin C, iron, magnesium and calcium.

The recipe

This mousse au chocolat is prepared very quickly and stays fresh in the fridge overnight. Our recipe is designed to make two portions but it can easily be scaled up. (Or down – but honestly, who wants that?)

Ingredients:

  • 2 small avocados
  • 2 medium-sized bananas
  • 200g dates
  • 8 tsp cocoa powder
  • ½ tsp baobab powder

Preparation: Put all ingredients in a mixer and mix well for about 2 minutes until fully blended. You can also use a hand blender if you have the patience, but you will need to use very soft dates (such as Medjool dates).

Yummy! We love this delicious South African take on mousse au chocolat.

Enjoy! If you love this recipe as much as we do, share it with your friends on Facebook, Instagram, or Pinterest.
