Every year, we celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May. It's traditional to buy your mother a gift on this special day, but many of us struggle to find a thoughtful present to give the woman who gave us life. There are so many options and the selection is so overwhelming that we often lose sight of what's really important. Before choosing a gift this year, it may help to reflect on the origins of the holiday. Where did Mother's Day actually come from?
In 1864, Anna Marie Jarvis was born in West Virginia. Her father was a pastor and her mother was Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis, an altruistic woman who devoted her life to charity. Ann was not only a Sunday School teacher but also the founder of the Mother's Day Work Clubs which fought for better sanitation and working conditions in local communities. These clubs raised money to buy medicine, inspected food and bottled milk, and hired women to look after the families of mothers who were suffering from tuberculosis. During the American Civil War, Ann also initiated Mothers Friendship Days which brought together community members and soldiers from all walks of life.

After Ann's death on May 9, 1905, her daughter Anna Marie was inspired to organize a special day to commemorate motherhood. In 1907, she held a memorial service in her church and asked the pastor to preach about the role of the mother in society. This sermon in memory of her mother was only the beginning.
In an effort to establish a national holiday honoring all mothers, Anna Marie wrote letters to politicians and other influential figures. She even bought an advertising agency to help spread her message.
Anna Marie's efforts were finally rewarded in 1910 when the state of West Virginia officially recognized Mother's Day as a national holiday. The rest of the states gradually followed suit, and Mother's Day eventually became an international holiday.
